Oxygen Based Anti-aging Skin Care

photos_oxy_renewal.jpg

By Dan Fryda

Here's something to think about:

  • At age 30, the loss of oxygen levels in the skin drops by 25%
  • At age 50, the loss of oxygen levels in the skin drops by up to 50%

In highly polluted environments the oxygen loss to the skin can be even higher.

Oxygen. Nature’s ignition for cellular metabolism is needed for optimum cellular turnover to preserve a youthful skin. But as we age, our skin’s ability to capture oxygen from blood circulation diminishes.  Capillaries begin to deteriorate limiting circulation of oxygen-loaded hemoglobin and vital skin nutrients. Moreover, sluggish circulation interferes with the evacuation of toxins leading to skin aging symptoms including wrinkles, age spots and loss of tone and moisture.

Our skin’s thirst for oxygen is vital in the production of collagen. Essentially, oxygen promotes metabolic processes within the dermis and viable cells to produce a higher state of activity. Oxygen enhances collagen formation in fibroblasts among many other actions resulting in the strengthening of the connective tissue matrix and firm, more youthful looking skin.

Spa Technologies has been working for two decades in formulating advanced skin care that blends liquid oxygen with natural anti-aging peptides, antioxidants, enzymes and more.  Thanks to a scientific breakthrough in liquid oxygen transport called Perfluorodecalin and perfluorohexane also known as PFC’s.

PFC’s are molecules approved by the FDA in the US for use in cosmetic products able to store gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide. In other words, this molecule acts as a replica of hemoglobin for cellular breathing responsible for flooding oxygen into the connective tissue while extracting (or washing away) carbon dioxide. As such this unique substance may be described as a cosmeceutical, in that its function can be classified as being between a cosmetic and a pharmaceutical.

PFC’s are both hydrophobic and lipophobic so they don’t dissolve in either water or oil.  Since PFCs are inert, they do not create damaging free radicals.  You can best see this demonstrated in Spa Tech’s signature Oxygen Renewal Complex—a tri-phased anti-aging serum.  The product is divided into three layers: an orange-colored oil-soluble layer of a complex of antioxidants derived from algae bio-technologies floating on top, a hydro-soluble middle layer (yellow) with seaweed actives, peptides and hyaluronic acid in the middle, and a clear layer on the bottom with pure liquid oxygen.  All colors reflect the colors of the actual ingredients used.

Vitamin B Is For Beautiful!

Vitamin B Is For Beautiful!

Vitamin B Is For Beautiful!

You may already know that B vitamins are essential for optimal health, but did you know they are one of the essential set of vitamins you need to achieve radiant, lovely skin? Read on to gain insight and increase the health and beauty of your skin!

What Can B Vitamins Do?

There are a number of different types of B vitamins and each has a specific, yet complimentary, role in the health of your skin. In a broad way B vitamins combine to maintain healthy metabolism, to help prevent cancer, to produce healthy red blood cells, combat stress, lower anxiety and depression, and to make your skin radiantly healthy.

Fact: when you are deficient in B vitamins, even just one of them, the first place you’ll notice it is in your skin! For example, vitamin B deficiencies can cause acne. Deficiencies in B vitamins can also be visible as uneven skin texture, redness, brown spots, sensitivity to sunlight and dryness, wrinkles, vitiligo, psoriasis, eczema, even rashes. If you have skin issues, then the list below may help you identify which B vitamins you want to focus on. Spoiler: Vitamin B7 is nicknamed ‘The Beauty Vitamin’!

Thiamine, also called vitamin B1: Enables your body to make new, healthy cells and has the ability help in times of stress by protecting your immune system. It helps convert simple carbohydrates into fuel for your body and brain, giving you energy.

Riboflavin, vitamin B2: Is a powerful antioxidant that diminishes free radicals in your body, which has an anti-aging effect, helping to slow aging and heart disease. Some studies point to a potential for B2 to even help reduce migraines. You’ll want to keep vitamin B2 away from sunlight because UV light breaks it down.

Niacin, vitamin B3: Can help treat acne when taken internally, or applied topically and is a primary catalyst in increasing HDL (good) cholesterol. It’s fairly rare to be deficient in Niacin, at least in developed countries. It has also been proven to promote collagen production, an important anti-aging benefit for your skin.

Pantothenic acid, vitamin B5: Can help reduce red and brown skin spots that come with aging, helps metabolize fats and carbs for energy, and is essential for the production of stress and sex related hormones. Since hormone imbalances are a major cause of skin issues, it is very helpful for those with acne, redness, or who need sebum balancing.

Pyridoxine, vitamin B6: Is a major component in the production of serotonin, melatonin and norepinephrine, a stress hormone… all related to mood, sleep patterns and our ability to manage stress. Some medical studies also found that it can help lower inflammation, which not only benefits your skin and is inherently anti-aging, but can also help people with inflammatory health conditions such as arthritis. Together with vitamins B9 and B12, it also helps orchestrate your body’s regulation of levels of homocysteine, and amino acid that is associated with heart disease.
Biotin, vitamin B7: Nicknamed “The Beauty Vitamin, Biotin is essential for healthy skin, nails and hair. Deficiency in biotin can cause itchy skin that is prone to an eczema type of dermatitis. It’s essential as a prenatal vitamin for healthy growth of the fetus, and has been shown to help people with diabetes control blood glucose. It’s an important vitamin for people with celiac disease as well, since celiac disease causes injury to intestines that keeps them from adequate nutrient absorption. 40-50% of the your biotin is created by health intestinal bacteria in the gut, so probiotics are a great way to help increase your biotin levels while gaining other big health benefits as well. Since it helps metabolize fats, it can help energy levels and lessen your body’s tendency to store fat.

Inositol, vitamin B8: Often overlooked, inositol is a vital cofactor for neurotransmitters in the brain. It seems to work especially well in women to reduce anxiety, PMS symptoms, eating disorders and more. Your body can make some, but supplementation can also be very helpful to improve a sense of wellbeing, peace, and happiness. All the major neurotransmitters in the brain rely upon inositol to relay brain messages and it is concentrated in areas of the brain related to communication. It is a natural antidepressant and anti-anxiety remedy that, in some studies, was as effective as medications for these symptoms. Less anxiety and better management of stress, plus improved sleep patterns are all achieved by inositol, and these factors help your skin too. It can also help people with Lithium induced psoriasis, countering the side effects of this medication in the skin.

Folic acid, vitamin B9: Also called folate, is given to pregnant women to help ensure optimal growth in their baby and helps prevent neurological birth defects. Some studies show that it also helps reduce depression and memory loss.

Cobalamin, vitamin B12: One of the most common B vitamins that people are deficient in, it is an especially important vitamin for vegans because it is only derived from animal sources. It works together with B9 to give optimal support to red blood cells, helping them to carry much needed oxygen throughout your body. Oxygen rich blood is extremely important for healthy skin! B12 helps you look healthy and feel energetic. In dermatological studies cobalamin deficiency has been shown to be related to vitiligo, aphthous stomatitis, atopic dermatitis, and acne.

Anti-Aging B Power!

Now that you understand how powerful B vitamins can be, perhaps you’re already inspired to head to Whole Foods for some supplements. But if not, this next B vitamin benefit may get you on the road!

Fact: B vitamins are one of the best anti-aging remedies for skin. They help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, smooth skin texture, heal skin damage, protect against cancer and help skin retain moisture. The greatest anti-aging power of B vitamins may be their ability to fight free radicals, one of the main catalysts in the aging process.

Free radicals occur naturally as part of the metabolic process from food we eat and the air we breathe. Free radicals are simply atoms that have lost one electron, which makes them unstable until that electron is replaced. Atoms are bound together into molecules by the action of electrons (negative charge) and protons (positive charge) into molecules, and the balance between the two must be exact.

When an electron is lost, that atom becomes unstable and begins to ‘attack’ other atoms in an attempt to ‘steal’ the needed electron from them. So at that point your body is literally attacking itself on an atomic level. Whoa! Ready for some peace? We are!

Antioxidants work by donating electrons to atoms that have become free radicals. If left unchecked, those free radicals create a chain reaction as they steal electrons from one another, which eventually injures healthy cells. So supplying antioxidants in the form of vitamins and supplements is truly essential to health on a cellular level. Antioxidants essentially stabilize your cells.

B Vitamin Rich Foods

If you want gorgeous, glowing, healthy skin it makes a lot of sense to understand the various B vitamins so that you can identify which, if any, you could benefit from supplementing. But first, rest assured that supplementing B vitamins is very safe. Did you know that it is impossible to take too many B vitamins? Since B vitamins are water-soluble, they are flushed from your body harmlessly if you take too many. As you probably know, the first place to start supplementing vitamins is through your diet.

Below is a list of foods rich in B vitamins. Get your grocery list ready!
Thiamine, also called vitamin B1: whole grains, peanuts, beans, spinach, kale, blackstrap molasses and wheat germ

Riboflavin, vitamin B2: almonds, wild rice, milk, yogurt, eggs, Brussels sprouts, spinach and soybeans

Niacin, vitamin B3: yeast, red meat, milk, eggs, beans and green vegetables

Pantothenic acid, vitamin B5: avocados, yogurt, eggs, meat and legumes

Pyridoxine, vitamin B6: chicken, turkey, tuna, salmon, lentils, sunflower seeds, cheese, brown rice and carrots

Biotin, vitamin B7: barley, liver, yeast, pork, chicken, fish, potatoes, cauliflower, egg yolks and nuts
Inositol, vitamin B8: fruits like cantaloupes, citrus fruits like grapefruit, orange, limes (but not lemons), whole grains and legumes

Folic acid, vitamin B9: dark leafy greens, asparagus, beets, salmon, root vegetables, milk, bulgur wheat and beans

Cobalamin, vitamin B12: fish, shellfish, dairy, eggs, beef and pork

Topical B Vitamins for Skin

Dermatologists and estheticians know that topical vitamin B derivatives can dramatically help the health and beauty of your skin. Sometimes they work best when they are both applied externally and taken internally as supplements. Medical studies also show that topical B vitamin formulas help wound healing. B vitamins help collagen production while fighting cancer.

So if you’re wondering how to get your hands on some high quality, natural, topical vitamin B skin care products that can transform your skin check out the list below. All of these can be purchased in Evo’s Lifestyle Boutique.

Marine Nutrients For Gorgeous Skin

Marine Nutrients For Gorgeous Skin

Marine Nutrients For Gorgeous Skin

Summer is here and we’re devoting this July to celebrating the wonder of our oceans. We’re fortunate to live in a world filled with tremendous natural beauty and power! We hope this article will inspire and empower you to be your best.

Nature provides us with an abundance of nutrients to support optimal health from a variety of sources. In this blog we’re focusing on marine nutrients from the sea and how they affect your skin. Read on to discover some fascinating information that will help you have gorgeous, glowing, healthy skin.

Throughout this article, ‘seaweed’ refers to seaweed, algae and other marine plants. The marine nutrients found in skin care products and treatments are derived from algae, seaweed, and other sources in our oceans and seas.

Seaweed and algae are loaded with healthy nutrients: vitamins and minerals such as magnesium, iron, copper, calcium, potassium, selenium, zinc, iodine, antioxidants, A, B, C,  E, and K vitamins, plus chlorophyll, phytonutrients, fatty acids and amino acids. No wonder seaweed and algae are a major source of food for salt water creatures of all types! Seaweed is good for us humans too.

Seaweed for Healthy Skin

Seaweed is pretty amazing in that varieties like giant kelp, rooted in the ocean floor, are some of the largest plants on the planet while other varieties are tiny and grow, rootless, suspended in the ocean.

The complex sugar molecules found in all types of seaweed support anti-aging naturally, Seaweed can help protect against free radicals, helps strengthen your skin’s cellular matrix, and is anti-inflammatory. It contains the compound fuciodan, which was proven to have anti-tumor properties in a UC Berkeley study. A study done at McGill University proved seaweed helps with the elimination of toxic metals such as mercury, lead, and aluminum.

Seaweed and algae have been shown to be anti-carcinogenic, offering protection against UV B ultraviolet radiation, a big bonus for sun damaged skin. It is also an emulsifying ingredient, holding water and acting as a skin softening agent in organic skin care products. It is anti-microbial, and anti-inflammatory, powerful benefits that slow the aging process and make skin glow with health. Astaxanthin, which is harvested from Haematoccoccus Algae helps in the treatment of eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis, and is a potent antioxidant. You can learn more here or simply read on.

Anti-Aging Skin Treatment

As we age, we slowly lose elastin fibers in our skin. This, combined with slower cell turnover, decreased collagen, the buildup of UV light and free radical damage, plus loss of muscle tone over time, combine to make our skin less elastic and more prone to damage from microscopic tearing and UV light. The result? You guessed it. Wrinkles and the loss of desirable skin texture and firmness. Seaweed slows the loss of elastin and collagen in your skin while protectingand nourishing it. So if you want to slow the aging process seaweed is your new best friend!
Here’s a list of some of the trace elements found in seaweed and how they help your skin resist aging.

  • Copper - Skin rejuvenation; collagen synthesis; promotes integrity of connective tissue including blood vessels
  • Zinc - Skin firmness & elasticity; prevents oxidative damage & promotes cellular apoptosis of cancerous cells
  • Manganese - Collagen production & Glycos- aminoglucan synthesis
  • Iodine - Boosts metabolism, estrogen balancing, boosts Immune system
  • Selenium - Free radical scavenger
  • Silica - Strengthens hair, skin, nails
  • Chromium - Regulates glycemic index

Algae Based Skin Care

Algae is truly a superfood and is literally the base of the food chain! It is an amazing nutrient source in that it contains see minerals and trace elements, plus all the organic molecules that are the building blocks needed for life.

Ohio State University studies proved that brown algae polyphenols provide anti-cancer protection. Plankton enzymes measurably repair DNA damage. Carotenoids in algae and seaweed provide protection to cell membranes while the asthaxanthin found in algae is one of the most powerful anti-oxidants on the planet! All of this is found in the unassuming little marine plant algae. Isn’t mother nature amazing?

Algae also contains a compound called alguronic acid. When alguronic acid is extracted using the proper methods, and applied to your skin via high quality skin care products, it has been proven to increase the synthesis of elastin while also speeding up cell regeneration. This leads to younger looking skin.

Algae is also packed with chlorophyll which kills germs, reduces inflammation, fights candida albicans, and helps reduce scarring. Since it destroys germs so effectively it’s also excellent for eliminating acne, skin blemishes and healing wounds. Chlorophyll essentially heals our bodies while reducing inflammation. An interesting fact: Chlorophyll is also like blood inside plants and has a molecular structure that is very similar to our own blood’s hemoglobin.

The Power of Chlorophyll

You’ve heard that you should eat a diet full of green leafy vegetables? Chlorophyll is one of reasons why. Chlorophyll has been shown to help lower the risk for certain types of cancers, including liver and colon cancer in clinical testing. Using sunlight as a catalyst, plankton and algae actually repaired cellular damage to DNA in testing using an electron microscope. Mitochondrial DNA was also restored to health. Best of all, in clinical testing these repairs to DNA occurred within four hours after Marine Repair Cream  by Spa Technologies was applied to skin… truly powerful results!

Chlorophyll detoxifies your skin. According to Dr. Joshua Axe, studies done by the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University showed that chlorophyllin and chlorophyll were equally effective at blocking uptake of aflatoxin-B1 in humans and decreasing biomarkers of aflatoxin-induced DNA damage.  This is just one example of the anti-carcinogenic properties of Chlorophyll.

Over 300 enzymes in the human body require magnesium to function, and chlorophyll is exceptionally rich in magnesium. Some of these same enzymes are responsible for DNA and cellular replication, again, critical to healthy skin and bodies. Magnesium is also essential for the distribution of oxygen inside our bodies, including oxygen to our skin. Your skin needs a healthy supply of oxygen to youthful; chlorophyll is an excellent catalyst to help achieve this.

Chlorophyll helps plants absorb and utilize sunlight. Amazingly, chlorophyll retains its ability to moderate sunlight even after it’s extracted from plants. When it’s added to skin care products it can actually absorb UV light before it reaches the skin to do damage.

Another interesting element found in some algae is a bacterial microphyte called Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (AFA). This is an especially powerful little bacteria that is richer in minerals and proteins than mother’s milk! This type of algae can stimulate cell renewal while its wide range of nutrients such as amino acids, enzymes, fatty acids, DHA, builds firmer skin and reduces inflammation. Algae cells are particularly permeable, making the nutrients it contains easily absorbed, a perfect ‘food’ for your skin.

The medical community knows that inflammation is a major root cause of aging and illness. Marine nutrients are especially good at reducing inflammation, both in the skin and internally. Lowered inflammation equals healthier skin and bodies!

Anti-Aging Marine Nutrients

Now that you know more about the incredible marine nutrients seaweed and algae contain it’s easy to understand why they can be a powerful anti-aging ingredients in skin care treatments and products (plus in your food diet). The vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants in seaweed are literally food for your skin because they are so easily absorbed, unlike some substances that are promoted in skin care but have molecules too large to actually be absorbed. Using marine botanical derived nutrients in skin care products is a no-brainer!

Feeding your skin a nourishing diet of all those vitamins, nutrients, fatty acids and amino acids listed above helps support the growth of new, healthy skin in a very gentle manner, while simultaneously detoxifying your skin. This is especially helpful for skin with rosacea, or skin that is sensitive or prone to allergic reactions and acne. You may notice measurable positive results from our calming facial and from using skin care products that contain marine sourced ingredients.

Are you inspired by this knowledge? We are! This is why our calming facial (on sale this month) uses organic seaweed and marine algae as main ingredients. Both have the anti-inflammatory, soothing properties that sensitive skin particularly needs.

Healing Rosacea

Healing Rosacea

Healing Rosacea

Rosacea is a very common skin condition that is often misunderstood and confused with acne. If you have rosacea you may have tried various treatments. New technology has brought breakthroughs in the past few years however, some of which are truly powerful and giving great results. At Evo Spa, we use a powerful blend of natural skin care products and cutting edge technology to successfully treat rosacea.

How to Tell if You Have Rosacea

Rosacea ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosacea ), is more common in the UK and affects more people globally of northwestern European descent than in other areas of the world. It is hereditary. Rosacea is more commonly found in people with light colored hair and fair skin, and is not found in people with dark skin.

Although rosacea affects all ages, it tends to present more often in women than in men, commonly between the ages of 30-50. It is characterized by red facial skin, acne type eruptions, and sometimes visible capillaries and inflammation. Eyes may also be affected, with irritation being the most common eye symptom. Skin with rosacea is commonly extra sensitive as well.

Although it is a lifelong condition to manage it is possible to heal and improve skin with rosacea. Many people who have rosacea have a mild version and never treat it beyond using make-up. They may notice that their skin gets very red under certain conditions, such as heat, while exercising, from spicy foods, but is not bright red all the time. It can be confused with adult acne.

The difference between rosacea and adult acne is that rosacea is usually only found on the face in central areas, and that blackheads are usually not abundant. While acne is driven by hormones, rosacea is triggered by heat, emotions, foods, and other factors. Both skin types may have pimples, but rosacea alone can cause the skin to thicken and become bumpy in larger facial areas. There are solutions to rosacea! We are proud to offer some of the best options at Evo Spa.

How to Heal Rosacea Diet

The best treatment regimen for healing rosacea begins with a healthy diet. Beauty truly comes from within, so nourish your skin each time you eat by including lots of fresh, organic, fruits and vegetables. Be sure to drink plenty of water and avoid excess alcohol, spicy foods, caffeine, and foods that contain high levels of histamines. Histamines are known to trigger rosacea and are found in fermented foods, and especially foods that contain tyramine. Here’s a list of foods that contain histamines. http://www.michiganallergy.com/ food_and_histamine.shtml

Cultivate Inner Peace

When you cultivate inner peace you nurture your body and skin alongside your mind. Incredible beings that we are, scientific studies have shown that your immune system and physical well being is boosted by meditation. A positive attitude is also a great way to cultivate beauty and reduce stress. Rosacea can be triggered by emotions. Each time you nurture yourself and reduce stress, you are giving yourself the gift of health and beauty. Beauty begins within.

Gentle Skin Care Products

Think of your skin care products as food for your skin. Since skin with rosacea tends to be extra sensitive you may get better results by avoiding strong acids and exfoliators. Go for gentle skin care products instead.

Gentle, organic and all natural ingredients in skin care products will help to reduce irritation and can decrease reactions to chemicals that too often are found in inferior skin care products. Remember, your immune system functions on a cellular level, and the magnificent organ we call skin absorbs much from the outside! Give your skin the best nourishment possible in the skin care products you use in order to see your rosacea diminish.

Skin Serums

Next, add specialty serums. For example, CPR serum by CosMedix blends Blue Agave, Arnica, Oligopeptide, Tamanu Oil, Totarol, Green Tea and Vitamin E into a treatment that visibly reduces redness immediately, and with time offers cumulative results. Your Evo Spa esthetician can tell you which products will bring you the best results. Having regular facials can help treat rosacea, and can also be a great way to test different products.

Light Therapy

Pulsed Light Therapy and, more recently, LED Colored Light Therapy treatments help reduce rosacea. Both have been used for many years successfully in the treatment of acne. Given the similarity of symptoms between acne and rosacea, perhaps it’s not surprising that light therapy works to help both.

Antibiotics are often prescribed as standard treatment for both acne and rosacea, but drugs have unwanted side effects. Since resistance to antibiotics is a global concern, light therapy offers viable alternative treatment options without drugs.(https://www.aad.org/media/news-releases/colored-light-sources-lighting-the-way-for-new-office-and-home-based-skin- devices)

We offer both Pulsed Light Therapy and LED Light Therapy at Evo Spa. Since both types of Light Therapy treatments heal gently from within, you’ll look healthy and glowing after a treatment, unlike peels and harsh lasers. There is no down time, and no one will be able to tell you’ve just been treated. But prepare yourself, because people will notice that your skin looks much better as you get regular treatments over time!

Rosacea is treatable!

Our estheticians are pros at helping people achieve healthy complexions. If you would like a private consultation with one of our estheticians please contact us to schedule an appointment. If you have rosacea, we can help design a custom treatment regimen that works. You’re going to love feeling confident, knowing you look beautiful!
